Microsoft is offering free help for Vista service pack 1 problems at this link. The site says:
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 1 (SP1). This support for SP1 is valid until March 18, 2009. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States [...]

Update Readiness Tool for Vista

There have been reports that the installation of Vista SP1 and/or other updates have hung up the system or caused other problems. Microsoft has issued something called the System Update Readiness Tool. The tool checks for inconsistencies in the Windows system resources that may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software.
