A sign of things to come?

Is this a portent that consumers are learning to break away from Windows? What do you think is Amazon’s best selling laptop? Some Windows 8 system from HP or Dell or Lenovo? No, it’s a Chromebook from Samsung according to Amazon. The Chromebook is a nice 11.6″ box that runs Google’s Linux-based Chrome OS. What helps sell the system is the price – $299. This is the kind of price a sytem can have when it doesn’t have the Windows millstone around its neck. It isn’t just the Window license fee that adds to the cost of a PC, it’s also the heftier hardware required to run the enormous and convoluted Windows code.

I will give you my “sign of things to come”. Three years ago, while shopping for food in our local supermarket I saw that they had Acer Aspire One netbooks on sale for $199.95. It had an 11.2″ screen and ran Windnows XP. I bought one and have been using ever since, when travelling.
