Supplement Windows Explorer

From its beginnings, Windows Explorer has had deficiencies as a file manager. For example, operations involving two locations such as copying or moving a file are more awkward than they need be. To some extent, the Task Pane in XP or Favorite Links in Vista/7 or Libraries in Windows 7 are a help but the single pane format of Windows Explorer is a basic drawback.

To fill the need for more versatile file managers, various commercial alternatives to Windows Explorer are available. Typically, they have dual-pane formats as well as tabs. Some of these are quite nice but average PC users will likely neither need all their features nor be interested in paying.

However, there are also some free programs worth considering by anyone who does much file manipulating. One that is rated well is xplorer² lite. Both TechSupportAlert and Gina Trapani at Lifehacker have recommended it. The Web site is at this link.

A really simple but useful little program is Explorer++. Basically, it is Windows Explorer with tabs added. It is a very small file and requires no installation. The addition of tabs can be very useful when working with several folders at the same time. I like it because it is a single executable file I can easily switch to when I need it and then quickly go back to Windows Explorer if I choose.
