Google search rank and the truth

Ranking high in a Google search is a sine qua non for getting any traffic on a Web site. But high rank implies no guarantee of the quality or even safety of a site. Google’s algorithms for ranking can easily be fooled by well-known search engine optimization techniques. In fact, malware distributors often manage to get their sites in the top ranks for searches about new worms and Trojans.

So it is discouraging to read that children believe Google ranks according to truthfulness. TechRadar reports:

A new study has found that children aged between 12 to 15 believe that Google’s search engine ranks websites in terms of truthfulness, rather than the messy business of links, click-throughs and relevance.

Good, useful sites do tend to get higher rankings but there is plenty of dross at the top as well. There is a whole industry devoted to getting sites to the top of Google rankings and that includes some unsavory types.
