FTC and disclosure for bloggers
One of the faults of much that appears on the Internet is that it isn’t clear when the author might have a conflict of interest. I posted about this recently and I am glad to see that the FTC is finally asking for some disclosure. eWeek reports:
The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) issued new guidelines Oct. 9 that require bloggers receiving cash or an in-kind payment for product reviews to disclose the connections they share with the seller of the product or service. The rules are part of a wider effort by the FTC to redefine disclosure requirements between endorsers and advertisers.
In the interests of full disclosure, I will repeat that I have no ties to the computer industry. In fact, I have never received a dime from any company in the industry. I have never carried advertising on any of my sites. On two occasions I have received free copies of Windows from Microsoft but you can judge for yourself whether that has affected my opinions.
