Review of free anti-virus software

As commercial anti-virus software has gotten more expensive, many have been turning to one of the free programs instead. There’s always the question, of course, as to whether the free programs are as good as the ones you have to pay for. One place to find out is “Gizmo” Richard’s appraisals at TechSupportAlert. Also, PC World recently reviewed a number of the common free anti-virus programs.

Both reviews rate Avira AntiVir Personal as their top pick. I also like the program but some may be put off by the window it displays once a day trying to sell the commercial version. Just close it. This small annoyance is a small price to pay for free protection.

I used to prefer AVG but its newest version has become too much of a resource drag.
