When Windows doesn’t recognize a USB device
These days a lot of different things get attached to computers using USB. Sometimes Windows may not seem to recognize a thumb drive or other external memory device. This may be because of a bad connection or a faulty drive but sometimes it is because Windows has become confused and has assigned a drive letter that is already in use by something else. If an external drive doesn’t appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer (“Computer” in Vista), see if it is listed in the Disk Management Console. (See this previous post for instructions on opening the console.) If the same drive letter has been assigned to more than one drive, change the letter of your USB drive to an unused letter.
