The updating problem
One reason that I keep saying that PCs are too complicated for the average user is the constant need to install software updates. Large numbers of people do not understand the process or simply ignore updates. The failure by many to install one or more of the constant flow of Windows security patches is a primary cause of many botnet infections. Also common programs like Adobe Flash and PDF Reader are being attacked frequently by malware writers and average PC users typically do not even know that these programs need security updating.
Even the Op-Ed page of the New York Times has had a piece about the frustration of ordinary PC users with the never-ending updating. Yesterday, regular columnist Gail Collins (not a computer professional) wrote about The Updating Game.
