Microsoft in the news business

Through its joint ownership of the cable network MSNBC, Microsoft already has a finger in the news business. The role may get bigger as MSNBC has purchased a local news site. Content Bridges reports:

MSNBC.com just paid several million to buy Everyblock, the much-watched Adrian Holovaty start-up, around local city data. Smart local interactive data should be a strong core of every local news(paper) site; it drives traffic and screams utility. The fact that MSNBC.com — co-owned by Microsoft and NBC — understands that opportunity better than newspaper companies speaks volumes. The deal also reinforces the notion, noted in the post below, that Microsoft will once again become a more dominant local, news-oriented player in the years ahead.

Added later: Editor & Publisher reports:

Advance Internet, the division representing 36 newspaper Web sites owned by the Newhouse family including NOLA.com and NJ.com, has entered into a deal with Microsoft.

The partnership will allow Advance salespeople to sell Microsoft Media Network inventory on the local level and offer behavioral targeted advertising.

It’s not so much news as advertising that Microsoft is interested in.
