Intel operating system

The small computer platforms that are becoming more and more popular may be offering a chance for other operating systems to challenge Windows after all. Because of Microsoft’s muscle and iron grip on the PC ecosystem, I have voiced doubts about Linux variations ever getting much of a foothold on netbooks.

One possible contender with muscle of its own is Google with its operating system called Android but it isn’t clear how much interest Google has in pushing Android.

However, a contender with all the credentials to sell a new operating system has appeared – Intel. And that’s a company that could give Microsoft some competition on smaller platforms. Computerworld reports:

In an effort to counter the growing dominance of Microsoft’s Windows OS in netbooks, Intel on Tuesday announced a beta version of a Linux OS it has developed for low-cost laptops and mobile devices.

The chip company on Tuesday announced a beta of Moblin 2.0, a stripped-down distribution of Linux optimized for smaller screens on netbooks and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Intel has fine-tuned Moblin for netbooks based on Atom chips with a simple user interface and improved power-saving features.
