Changing the default browser

A number of blogs have been complaining that the express installation of the new Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) makes IE8 the default browser without telling you. While it may be an annoying practice, it’s nothing new. Unless I am mistaken, IE7 did that also. And Firefox does it as well. Perhaps people are upset because Microsoft controls the Windows update process and thus in effect can change your browser setting automatically. In any event, it’s easy to reset the default browser setting.

If Firefox was your choice for default browser and the setting got changed, Firefox will either ask you if you want to make it the default again the next time you open Firefox or you can do it yourself.

Make sure IE is not open and open Firefox. Go to Tools-Options-Advanced. In the “System Default” section of the Options window, click the button “Check now” to get a dialog box where you can make Firefox the default. To have Firefox check every time you open it, place a mark by “Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup”.

Other browsers will have a similar process to make them the default. For example, if you actually want to make Internet Explorer the default, open Tools- Internet Options- Programs. The dialog box has a button “Make default”.
