The operating system that won’t die
Windows XP simply won’t go away. Many PC users have decided that XP has all the features and stability they’ll ever need and is plenty safe enough. But the kicker may be that XP will run on a lot less hardware than is demanded by Vista or even the slimmed-down Windows 7. In other words, XP is a fine OS for netbooks. User demand has had the rare effect of forcing Microsoft to do something it didn’t really want to do. Windows XP will be available to netbook manufacturers for a year after Windows 7 comes out. Computerworld reports:
Microsoft Corp. plans to continue offering Windows XP to hardware vendors for use on netbook PCs for a year after the upcoming release of Windows 7.
“OEMs that are using Windows XP on netbooks will have the ability to install Windows XP for one year — 12 months — after Windows 7 general availability,” Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows product management group, said during a conference call with reporters.
