AVG link scanner
Link scanners are browser add-ons that check to see if a link that you have clicked is a possible malware site. I have not been a fan of link scanners because they slow down browsing and are only as good as whatever method is used to assess a link’s safety. One of the best known is McAfee’s Site Advisor but it has been reported to use quite old data in its evaluations of sites. Now AVG has released a free browser add-on called LinkScanner. Neil Rubenking writes about it at AppScout:
LinkScanner checks sites before you visit them and checks search hits in Google, Yahoo! and MSN. It specifically analyzes each page’s HTML looking for exploits and other malicious code.
In an earlier post, he described LinkScanner:
LinkScanner works with XP and Vista, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and, according to AVG, is compatible with all major security software. It integrates with Internet Explorer 6 or later and Firefox 2 or later. You can obtain the free download at http://linkscanner.avg.com and get support at http://freeforum.avg.com.
Personally, I try to avoid too many browser add-ons and I haven’t tried this one. However, the ever increasing number of poisoned Web sites may make something like this a desirable addition to your defenses. If anyone has used it, let us know your experience.
