Millions and millions of domains

A domain is the main part of an address on the Web- microsoft.com, for example. Anyone who wants to put pages on the Web has to either arrange to place them on an existing domain or register one of their own. This blog is on a sub-domain of the domain vlaurie.com. If a name isn’t already taken, anyone can register it for a small annual fee at one of the many registrars, who in turn arrange to have the name placed in the central databases. The process is under the general governance of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Recent statistics show that there are now around 180 million domains, with registrations in China growing rapidly. Each domain can contain many sub-domains and countless different Web pages. The number of distinct URLs found by Google was already over a trillion last year. And that doesn’t count the Deep Web.
