Inflight Internet may be a mixed blessing
Airlines are beginning to offer Wi-Fi on board their flights. Judging from my experience on trains, I’m not sure this is necessarily a good thing. Sure, it may mean a long flight can be less boring but it may also mean that a flight can be even more aggravating than it is now. The New York Times commented on the possibility last month with a blog post, Think the Guy in the Next Seat Is Annoying Now?. And in a recent business article, Not Everyone Is Cheering as Wi-Fi Takes to the Air, the Times writes:
But this new frill is hardly as benign as a bag of pretzels. It may be a new source of tension between passengers on packed planes. A flight attendants’ union has even expressed concern that terrorists could use it to plot attacks.
And there is the inescapable fact that one of the last places on earth to get away from it all can now be turned into a mobile office.
