Resolve to backup
I don’t put much stock in New Year’s resolutions but one resolution I urge you to make and keep is to back up your computer or at least to back up important personal data. I have had a lot of people tell me that they don’t need to back up because they keep nothing important on their computer. Then when their hard drive crashes they are surprised to find that they have lost a lot of stuff they wished they hadn’t. So every few months I come back to the subject of backups. For example, see this link.
I don’t know how it will work out in practice but a new wrinkle in backup drives is a special USB flash drive from SanDisk with a backup button. Flash drives are now so cheap that large capacities are available for pretty low prices. PC World describes the SanDisk drive:
The new SanDisk Ultra Backup USB Flash Drive doesn’t want to be just another garden variety flash drive that you toss in a drawer. To avoid that fate, SanDisk has added a small backup button to the drive, which is roughly the size of an index finger. The button is designed to make it easier to back up critical data with less muss and fuss than an external hard drive might require.
