Making long URLs more manageable

A lot of Web sites have many pages and have to employ long complicated names for their links. Long names are no problem when you are just clicking on a link but when you want to list an URL in printed material there can be a problem. For that and other reasons, there are services that will create a short version of a long name. Lifehacker has picked TinyUrl as the best service. TinyUrl has been around for quite a while and that is an important consideration.

Note that these services work by storing your shortened URL on their server and then relaying to the actual URL. So any security measures that do not like it when Web site requests get redirected from one server to another may block URL shortening services. Also some sites explicitly block services like TinyUrl.
