You have put your finger on what I see as a major problem with Windows and home computing. Many millions of home PC owners never make any configuration changes. They don't know how and furthermore they do not want to have to learn how. Windows is too complex for this large group of untrained people who just want to use email and surf the Web a little. Windows is fine for businesses with an IT staff or for those who are willing to spend a little time learning something about how Windows works. It is not the best operating system for the many who want an Internet appliance. Unfortunately, neither is any of the current alternatives. And the Microsoft monopoly goes on.

Thanks for these.

I think the problem is that most people are so set in their ways that they don't really want to have to tweak. They expect it to be to their preference as it comes off the shelf. And these are usually the same kind of people that are still using IE6 because it's a routine and what they're used to.

I thought Vista was a terrible misstep at first. But given a little time to adapt, I can now appreciate that it's not all bad. I think Microsoft will definitely have a rethink with its next OS though.
