Netbooks galore

Everybody’s getting into the act. It looks like netbooks are going to be part of the PC line from all major OEMs (and some not so major). HP and Lenovo have announced new models and eWeek gives a rundown on some of the latest offerings.

The latest HP model is getting a lot of attention. I considered it briefly but its particular specs don’t appeal to me and last week, after seeing one belonging to my SeniorNet colleague Joel May, I bought an Acer Aspire One. I thought seriously about buying it with Linux but I ended up with Windows XP Home so my wife could also use it. For a price of somewhere around $350 (there are various deals so it depends), it seems like a great machine for a kid or for carrying around. I had been worrying about the keyboard on netbooks but the Aspire seems adequate even for my thick fingers. Of course, it’s slower than my $2000 machines but what do you expect?

Update: More about the Acer netbook at InfoWorld.
