Microsoft issuing emergency security patch
Microsoft usually waits to bundle Windows security patches into its monthly update. However, it seems that a problem has been found that is severe enough to warrant an emergency update to be issued at 1 pm EST. Mary Jo Foley reports:
Microsoft hasn’t offered many details about the patch, other than to say it should be applied immediately to Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. The flaw being patch is less of an issue for Vista and Windows Server 2008 users, according to the company.
Update: The patch is now available and I have downloaded and installed it. It isn’t a very big file so installing it goes quickly. It requires a reboot. Here’s a description from PC World:
Microsoft fixed a critical bug in its Windows operating system Thursday, saying that it is being exploited by online criminals and that it could eventually be used in a widespread “worm” attack.
Microsoft took the unusual step of issuing an emergency patch for the flaw, several weeks ahead of its regularly scheduled November security updates, saying that it is being exploited in “limited targeted attacks.
