Increase the number of possible entries in “My Recent Documents”

I have previously given tips about how to keep the entries in My Recent Documents cleared out (Windows XP). A reader has written me with a different question. He wants more entries than the default value of 15 and asks, “Do you know how I can have more than just the last 15 documents appear under My Recent Documents?“

Yes, you can have more than 15 but you have to edit the Registry. Here’s the procedure:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (Regedit)
  2. Navigate to the key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  3. Add a new DWORD and call it MaxRecentDocs
  4. Set the value to your desired number of entries

You can read up on editing the Registry at my site, The Registry on Windows. Or if you would prefer not to deal with editing the Registry directly and 25 entries is enough for you, download this little REG file. Unzip the file and double-click it or right-click and choose “Merge” from the context menu. Be sure to back up your Registry first.
