We need a new operating system
Microsoft may be working hard on Windows 7 but the fact remains that underneath it will still contain much of the old Windows structure. What is needed for most home PC users is an entirely new operating system. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has some interesting ideas about what a new OS should be like. He says:
The way that Windows currently works in terms of user data and installed applications is a mess. It’s not a deliberate mess but more a natural result of opting to provide ongoing support for outdated ideas. Windows Vista is a modern OS that still clings desperately onto Windows 95 paradigms that belong to an era where users had a lot less data than they do now.
He goes on to suggest a three-layer structure for an OS where the operating system, applications, and data would each be separate.
