Is Microsoft scared?

I don’t know if Microsoft management is scared but ABC News has a piece, What Is Microsoft So Afraid Of?. The article has a sub-heading, “The Company’s Actions Show It Is Not Just Scared But Fears for Its Existence”. It then goes on to say:

It is hardly news when the Redmond software giant behaves a little oddly. But usually that behavior takes the form of bullying competitors or the self-delusion of believing that it is a major technology innovator.

But Microsoft’s unusual behavior over the last few weeks has taken a different form: for the first time, perhaps since the Netscape threat arose in the early 1990s, Microsoft is acting scared.

The article is an interesting read and makes some valid points but I suspect that the author’s speculation about Microsoft’s decline and demise is a little premature.

Great article and thanks for posting the link. This brings to mind the odd, slow decline of Novell in the early ’90s. I can recall reading very similar articles highlighting incongruous behavior in that company. Although the decline of Novell was not as drastic as pundits predicted, the decline was nonetheless very real. Today Novell is still around and is a strong company but it’s revenue and sway in the market is nothing like it once was. Will the same happen to Microsoft? Only three technology firms (that I know of) have been able to weather these storms over the long haul: IBM, Oracle and Intel. The question is whether or not Microsoft will be able to do the same.
