Ubuntu Linux at Amazon, Best Buy

Like many versions of Linux, Ubuntu distros can be downloaded free. However, the average home PC user faces a number of obstacles if he or she wants to give Linux a try. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has written a number of posts about the problems, which I have referred to previously. Whether it will make trying out Linux any easier, I don’t know, but for $20 you can now buy Ubuntu Hardy Heron at Amazon or Best Buy. eWeek reports:

ValuSoft, which is packaging the application, says the “Ubuntu Linux” package includes printed documentation and 60 days of unlimited customer support.

It’s the printed documentation and the customer support that is important here. That should make it easier to try out Ubuntu. I hope this effort is successful at making Linux more popular. Still, I wonder if many average home users will be customers. Most are afraid even to try to install Windows themselves.

Correction: It seems that only Best Buy has the version with a manual and 60 days support for $19.99. The Amazon offer is just a disk for $12.95.
