Change the background for desktop icon labels
It is not always apparent but the labels for desktop icons have their own background area, which may be a different color from the general desktop background. Normally, the icon label background is transparent but the setting sometimes gets changed to the system color. Icon labels will then appear in little rectangular boxes that may contrast with your desktop wallpaper. Changing the setting to restore the transparent label background isn’t obvious and here is the procedure (Windows XP):
- In the Start menu, right-click My Computer
- Choose Properties from the context menu
- Click the Advanced tab in the dialog box that opens
- Click the Settings button in the section labeled “Performance”
- Click the “Visual Effects” tab
- In the list of settings, put a check in the box in the line that says, “Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop”
- Click “OK” twice
Note that although the setting only mentions drop shadows, transparency is also involved.
