Using Windows XP in a virtual system
Using virtual machines for computing is more and more prevalent and is likely to be a common practice in the future. You can use free software from Microsoft to try out running a virtual system and Scott Dunn gives some details at Windows Secrets. Although Dunn’s emphasis is on running XP on a Vista system, similar considerations apply to running XP on an XP machine. Why run two XP systems? It’s one way of dealing with security problems. If a virtual machine gets infected with malware, just delete it and create a fresh setup. Or if you like to try out a lot of different software, it’s a way to keep starting with a fresh setup.
Addendum: I should mention that malware can cross over to a main system from a virtual system unless precautions are taken. One way is to run with limited privileges although that limits the usefulness.
