Possible new kind of tracking cookie

As originally intended, the little text files called Internet “cookies” were harmless and provided a useful function. Then advertisers got hold of them and turned them into a way to track your browsing. The information that could be gotten from a cookie was still rather general. Now, however, the New York Times Bits blog reports on a new way to use cookies to track every Web page that you visit.

Fortunately, defending against tracking cookies is not that hard. I have discussed the methods of cookie control in several articles at surfthenetsafely.com. Making a custom setting for blocking cookies in Internet Explorer is discussed at my computer education site.
