No extension for Windows XP except at very low end
Microsoft has officially announced that Windows XP will no longer be available to large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) after June 30, except for ultra low-cost PCs (ULPCs). Mary Jo Foley reports:
As Microsoft officials announced on April 3, makers of ULPCs will be allowed to continue to preload XP on ULPC machines until June 30, 2010, or one year after general availability of the next version of Windows, whichever comes first, according to Microsoft.
Windows XP will still be available to individuals and small systems builders until January 31, 2009. Also, mainstream (free) support for XP will be provided until April 2009 and free security fixes and paid support until 2014.
