Managing your money on the Web
An example of a Web 2.0 application is the financial software called “Mint”. Walt Mossberg’s associate Katherine Boehret has been trying it. She gives some details about its features and comments:
Mint was created for 20-somethings like me who want to pay more attention to their finances but aren’t interested in taking hours each week [...]
Detailed instructions on uninstalling software
I previously mentioned the free program Revo as being a better way to uninstall things from Windows. The How-To Geek has put up a detailed explanation of how to use Revo. The program isn’t hard to use and you could have figured it out yourself but it’s helpful to be able to see how a [...]
Im Westen Nichts Neues
With apologies to the ghost of Erich Maria Remarque, who wrote the powerful anti-war novel with the above title (translated in English as “All Quiet on the Western Front”).
The deadline for Steve Ballmer’s ultimatum to Yahoo to surrender by Saturday or else has come and gone. So far silence reigns, nothing from Redmond and [...]
The malware industy
As indicated in the previous post, creating and marketing malware is becoming an organized industry. InfoWorld reports on the growing problem:
The latest iteration of Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report — covering its research over the final six months of calendar 2007 and released on Tuesday at the ongoing RSA Conference 2008 in San Francisco — [...]
Malware authors include EULAs to protect their work
When I first saw this article at Ars Technica, I wondered if it was a hoax. It’s not April 1 so maybe it’s legitimate. It begins:
Selling botnets for particular attacks, black markets for stolen identities, and malware construction kits are all now par for the course for the increasingly commercial malware industry. Discovering that malware [...]
Malware on Web sites (continued)
The wide-spread infection of Web sites continues. Information Week reports:

Because otherwise legitimate Web sites [...]
Can Ubuntu Linux make it to the desktop?
Although it has many virtues, even Ubuntu Linux has made little progress in being adopted by home PC users. The geeks may sing its praises but the average, non-technical user is still too often baffled by it. Part of the reason is the Linux reliance on the command line. Now, I love the command line [...]
What people do online
The investment house Morgan Stanley issues periodic studies of Internet trends. The latest trend is the rapid growth of social sites. TechCrunch reports:
Morgan Stanley’s Internet Trends report from last month takes a big turn from previous reports – the focus is nearly 100% on social applications and how they are taking over [...]
More TV programs on the Web
The New York Times reports:
Within the last few months, television distributors have opened up their libraries of classic content online, making thousands of episodes of programs like “The Twilight Zone” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” available free.
On Monday, Warner Brothers is expected to add a new twist, announcing the rebirth of the WB [...]
Microsoft denies that server hacks are its fault
The large scale infection of Internet servers mentioned Friday has been attributed by Panda Security to flaws in Microsoft server software. The Washington Post reported:
Hundreds of thousands of Web sites – including several at the United Nations and in the U.K. government — have been hacked recently and seeded with code that tries to exploit [...]
Dell to keep offering Windows XP
Although June 30 is the deadline for OEM offerings of Windows XP, Dell says that it will use the Vista downgrade loophole to keep selling selected laptop systems with XP as the operating system. Gregg Keizer reports:
Dell will continue to install Windows XP on new PCs after Microsoft’s June 30 retirement date by taking [...]
