All about file systems

One of the more technical aspects of a computer is the file system. Most of the time, average PC users need not be concerned with what file system is on their computer. Sometimes, however, it is something that has to be considered, as when Microsoft started using NTFS instead of the various FAT systems. Thus, choosing a file system became an issue even for home PC users when Windows XP replaced Windows 9X/Me. (See vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/filesystems.htm for a discussion.) Also you may need to think about file systems when formatting flash or thumb drives. Or certain issues with files on CDs or DVDs may be caused by the different file systems that these media use.

The various computer file systems that have been used have an interesting history and there is a nice article at Ars Technica on the subject. It surveys some background history as well as the differences between Unix, Apple, Microsoft, Linux, and others. It also discusses what future file systems may be like.
