The future of ICANN
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the nonprofit group that manages the Internet domain name system. Because the US government funded the Internet in its beginning, ICANN has always been under US oversight. However, as the Web became truly world wide, political pressure has built to put ICANN under some sort of international supervision. Currently, ICANN has an agreement with the US Commerce Department but that ends in September, 2009. PC World has an article discussing what might lie ahead for ICANN.
