ActiveX security problem in QuickTime
The ActiveX QuickTime plug-in for Internet Explorer has a security bug according to Computerworld. Apple just issued an update for the player last week but this is a new bug. If all this sounds familiar, it is. As the Computerworld article points out:
Gaffie’s revelations added to QuickTime’s problems and marked yet more vulnerabilities in ActiveX controls. Apple’s media player was patched 34 times last year and is on a pace to best that during 2008.
Meanwhile, ActiveX has been plagued with a series of bug disclosures recently, starting with several that affected a plug-in distributed to members of the Facebook and MySpace.com social networking sites. The situation was serious enough last week to prompt the U. S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, to recommend that users disable all ActiveX controls.
Use Firefox. If you disable all ActiveX, a lot of sites are unusable in Internet Explorer and you have to add all the ones you think are safe to the Trusted Zone. You can do it but it’s tedious. If you must use Internet Explorer, the next post gives some links to instructions for configuring IE.
