Advertising for your eyes only

More and more emphasis is being placed on ads that are tailored to the individual. Your tastes and preferences in Web viewing are tracked, tabulated, and processed. You are then presented with ads that some algorithm perceives as appealing to the real you. Even the readers of news reports are fair game. A story in the Miami Herald reports on Making Online News Sell. Here’s an excerpt:

Such is the promise that Internet advertising holds out to the news business. It’s the promise that all news, features, commentary, analysis, whether in print, sound or pictures — in fact, the full range of topical fact and opinion that constitutes online journalism — will be minutely inventoried and laden with commercial pitches calibrated to specific individuals.

It’s the promise of journalism as a perfect selling machine.

No doubt that last line is exactly what Rupert Murdoch has in mind. (See the previous post.)
