Find out what’s running
Sometimes you have a computer problem and you need to know what programs, services, and/or processes are actually running. There are a variety of ways to do this and I have discussed several at the Computer Education site, including the Windows Task Manager. However, nothing is as extensive and comprehensive as the free utility from Microsoft Sysinternals called Process Explorer. An updated version that runs on Windows Vista as well as XP is available. Mark Russinovich describes it:
Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.
It may be a little more geeky than the average PC user wants to deal with and Task Manager is a good way to obtain information that is less overwhelming. However, experienced PC users will appreciate the power of Process Explorer.
