Privacy on the Internet

As we use more and more online services, we reveal more and more about ourselves to the service providers. How do the service providers like Google use that information? How well do they protect us from unwanted snooping? For the specific case of Web based email, PC World has some information about the policies of Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft.

With regard to searches, Google has posted two video clips on YouTube explaining their practices. At the Google blog, Jane Horvath, Senior Privacy Counsel, writes:

Online privacy isn’t always an easy thing to understand—or to explain. When I recently joined the company, I was happy to learn that Google was continuing with the effort to make our privacy practices (and your choices) even clearer and more accessible. We are using YouTube to post videos that explain how, when, and why we collect information about searches, and how you can protect your privacy while using our search engine.

Update: A faithful reader (my wife) has pointed out a very relevant article at Slate that asks, Does Google know too much about us?
