New Microsoft Office file formats redux
A while back I made a post about the new file formats in Microsoft Office 2007. I keep encountering people who are confused by the new formats so I am going to repeat what I said previously:
There are many changes in the latest release of Microsoft Office. The interface is quite different and there are new file formats. The new formats are not compatible with older versions of Office so PC users who do not install Office 2007 are going to need to download converters. To install the converters in an older version of Office, go to this Microsoft page.
The new file format has extensions with “X” tacked on at the end. For example, instead of “somefile.doc”, a Word file name will be “somefile.docx”, an Excel spreadsheet will have extension “.xlsx” and so on. If someone sends you a document with one of these extensions, you won’t be able to open it without either Office 2007 or one of the converters.
It will help you recognize the different file formats if you have made file extensions visible. Go to this reference for a tutorial on the subject and/or see this previous post on showing file extensions.
