Anti-spyware reviews
Anti-spyware programs are an important part of the arsenal against Internet malware and PC World reviews five of the programs at this link. Two common programs that get low grades are Microsoft Windows Defender and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free programs but free but may turn out to be a costly way to try to save money.
The Microsoft program has consistently rated low since it came out. Unfortunately, Microsoft hype can lead PC users to believe they are better protected than they are. It’s built into Vista but Vista users would be well advised to consider better protection.
The low rating of Spybot Search and Destroy is another disappointment. This free program was one of the first of its type and is widely used. It looks like it may be coming to the end of the road as a free program. Its many users are going to have to look for something else.
The highest rating went to Spyware Doctor, which has also been rated highly in other tests. However, it costs $30 for an initial year’s use and $30/year thereafter so it isn’t cheap.
