How the average PC user benefits from multicore CPUs
Most new PCs now come with some variety of multicore processor. If you have been wondering what that means for performance, read this article by Serdar Yegulalp for some analysis. The article is a little technical in places but the gist is that there is substantial benefit for many common tasks with the exception of doing video compression. Here’s an excerpt:
The average user will indeed notice a major performance boost by running a multiple-core machine, especially when using today’s operating systems and applications. Things like application and desktop responsiveness will run all the more efficiently. So will running multiple programs side by side.
