The newest baby gift

It’s not a big trend yet but who knows how it might develop? Some proud new parents are registering an Internet domain name for their newborn. That works if your name hasn’t already been taken but poor little Mary Smith may be out of luck. (Marysmith.com is taken, I looked. So is marysmith.org)

Actually, this gives me an idea for a new type of identity system. Give everybody a password-protected Web site. Then instead of giving out your social security number as an ID, give the password for your Web site. The party that needs to check your identity can then go to the Web site and see your picture and any other pertinent data that they need. Unlike a social security number, you can keep changing the password for your personal Web site.
