The ignorance of politicians

Technology is intimately intertwined into the workings of our society. Many important questions of the nation’s governance involve decisions about technical questions. Yet most of our elected officials have little or no technical knowledge. Sometimes it seems like having a panel of tone-deaf people judging performances of music. For example, the Internet has had, and continues to have, a revolutionary effect on the whole world. Few in Washington even understand what the Internet is. (OK, Al Gore probably did but he isn’t in Washington anymore.) John Dvorak comments on the situation in his PC Magazine column:

The fact is that few members of either party at the national level have the time or the inclination to catch up to Web 1.0, let alone Web 2.0. The general public can barely keep up

Dvorak says that members of the news media are also ignorant and goes on to wonder:

All of this did get me to thinking about when we will actually have a president and Congress (and Supreme Court, for that matter) who are all computer-literate and genuinely Internet-savvy. I can assure you that they are not now and it shows.
