Is Linux finally an alternative for the average home PC user?
For what seems like years, devotees have been saying that Linux was a better alternative to Windows. Although Linux has many good points, it has remained too geeky for the typical home user. Although many, myself included, like to tinker with computer systems, the average person using a computer at home wants an appliance and has no interest in systems that require a lot of care and feeding. Now, finally, the day may have arrived when some of these home users (but it won’t be many) will be using Linux. The new distro of Ubuntu Linux has gotten Dell’s approval and the big computer manufacturer will be selling units with Linux preinstalled.
It’ll be interesting to see what reception this move by Dell receives. Not that Windows is in danger of being supplanted any time soon. According to ZDNet:
Of the 160.5 million operating-system licenses shipped in 2006, Windows accounted for 92 percent, compared with 4.1 percent for Mac OS X and 3.8 percent for Linux
