Tame the annoying Caps Lock key
My typing skills are pretty low level and I keep hitting the Caps Lock key when what I want is the Shift key or some other nearby key. Then before I know it I have spewed out a bunch of upper case. I have absolutely no use for the Caps Lock and I consider it the bane of the keyboard. Apparently I am not alone since a recent search in Google on “hate caps lock” showed 852,000 entries. One of the common problems in beginning computer classes that I have taught was a student baffled by an inadvertent Caps Lock. Fortunately, there have been ways to get rid of the pesky key ever since the Windows 95 kernel toys. I discuss a few of these on another page but my favorite is the free utility KeyTweak, which can be downloaded here. It gives a quick and easy way to convert the Caps Lock key into some other more useful key. I change it to a Shift key. KeyTweak is actually much more than a fix for Caps Lock since it gives you a way to remap your whole keyboard.

Thanks for the reference. That’s one I didn’t know about. Another way to keep things simple is to down load the REG file at http://www.usnetizen.com/fix_capslock.html

I can see where KeyTweak would be the preferred approach for more technically-inclined users. For more typical users, I find that CapsUnlock by BrainSystems is an elegant solution.

When used in the default configuration, you must press both the Shift key and the Caps Lock key in order to activate the Caps Lock key. Otherwise, CapsUnlock tells the OS to ignore a simple press of the Caps Lock key. An additional enhancement is the option to disable the Insert key.
