Microsoft buys more speech recognition technology

I mentioned Vista’s speech recognition feature in a previous post and it seems that Microsoft is quite serious in this area. They just bought privately held Tellme Networks Inc., which makes Web-based voice technology. The amount paid is rumored to be as much as $800 million according to the Wall Street Journal. It seems that Microsoft may have plans for you to talk to their new Web applications. The Wall Street Journal says:

Tellme, Mountain View, Calif., offers services that use voice-recognition and Internet technology to respond to spoken requests over the telephone. The Journal reported that the acquisition would fit Microsoft’s broader ambitions to build Web-based voice capabilities into its own products. Businesses and consumers have lately begun turning to the Internet to do things they once did using boxed software

ZDNet says, “Microsoft and Bill Gates have been in pursuit of speech technologies for a long time”, and wonders why they have to buy technology:

You have to wonder about the effectiveness of all the money Microsoft has spent on speech technology R&D over the years if the company ends up acquiring Tellme for hundreds of millions.
