Build your own PC
Readers with a long memory may recall Heathkits. (BTW if you wonder what happened to the company, go here.) They provided a set of parts and components with instructions on how to assemble them. Many of us of a certain age put together various pieces of electronics that way, including computers. There is no Heathkit for computers now but the components have become quite standardized and it is easy enough to build your own computer. You no longer have the convenience of getting all the parts and pieces in one kit but it isn’t hard to assemble everything required from one of the supply houses. You don’t save any money trying to compete with Dell and its Chinese labor but you can have a customized system with exactly the parts you want and learn a lot about computers. There is an online version of How to Build Your Own PC at the PC Guide Website. It’s a little dated (2005) but still useful. Another place to look is ArsTechnica. More recent references with recommendations for a Vista system are at:
- TechReport
- PC Magazine
- Tom’s Hardware
- George Ou at TechRepublic (may require sign-in)
