Social bookmarking and social search
The Internet is constantly generating new things and a current one is “social search.” The term is a loosely defined one but basically means Internet search results from a bunch of people instead of from a computer algorithm and searchbots. Numerous sites have sprung up where the members post sites that they recommend. These are then compiled into categories and lists for others to consult and to vote for if they like the site. Sites like Digg.com and Del.icio.us have grown enormously in recent months and have become a powerful factor in determining the popularity of other Web sites. A mention in one of them can momentarily bring huge traffic to a site. Many surfers now use one of these services for finding things instead of the conventional search engines. That’s why you now see links on so many sites asking you to cast a vote for that page at one of the big social bookmarking sites.
