Is Vista any faster than XP?

The computer world often reminds me of what the Red Queen said to Alice in Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass”:

Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.

Every time a new Windows operating system comes out, it seems to require bigger and faster hardware just to give the same performance. I remember that Windows XP was no faster than Windows 98 and it seems that Vista is no faster than XP. In fact, some recent tests that have been reported indicate that Vista is a little slower. Results can be seen at ExtremeTech and at Tom’s Hardware. To be fair, I have to point out that one problem with an early assessment is that there are Vista features that depend on hardware or drivers that are just becoming available. Another factor is that little current software is written to take advantage of some of Vista’s capability. Nonetheless, Microsoft’s spin on Vista that it has much better performance remains to be proved.
