“Widgets”, “gadgets”, or whatever cute name you want to give them, are little programs that can be dragged right to the desktop where they sit in their own little window and provide some function like a stock ticker or the weather or an analog clock. Apple Macs have had the capability for sticking these little applications on the desktop for some time and Vista has copied the idea with its “Sidebar”. Also Google and Yahoo and others have provided software to provide for this type of capability in Windows XP for a while now.
Whatever version you use, there is a site called Widgipedia that will let you search the hundreds of different widget-type applications that have been written.
