Don’t call us, we’ll call you

We all get bombarded with messages that we do not want- phone solicitations, spam email, junk snail mail, and so on. Today’s NY Times has an article with some suggestions on how to cut down on all these unwanted intrusions. There are places that maintain lists of people who want to be left alone. These are called “opt-out” lists and one that is a great contributor to undisturbed dinner times is the “Do Not Call” list that the FTC maintains. This one has some legal teeth and has really reduced the number of unwanted phone calls. Marketers may not like it but 137 million Americans have chosen to put their names on it. If you haven’t already enrolled, you can do it online at the National Do Not Call Registry.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent for spam email. This ever mounting problem is still waiting for a solution. There is, however, a list for those who want to cut down on the old-fashioned kind of junk mail. It only works for merchants who participate but it’s better than nothing. You can enroll online at The Mail Preference Service.

There is a site for further information on opt-out lists at http://opt-out.cdt.org/
