How to remove the text below an icon

Here’s an unusual trick that I’ll pass along for what it’s worth. I can’t remember where I learned it and I don’t use it but some PC users like to remove the text that appears beneath an icon and just have an unlabeled icon. There’s a way to do that that uses the Numeric Keypad that appears on the right side of most desktop keyboards. (Note that, laptops often don’t have a Numeric Keypad because of space considerations.) Right-click the icon whose text you wish to remove and choose “Rename”. You might think that you could then remove the text by simply entering the spacebar as the new name but that does not work. Instead you can use the ability of the Numeric Keypad to enter the code for various characters (More about this feature of the Numeric Keypad is discussed at this link.) Make sure Numlock is on and hold down the Alt key. Then in the area for the new name, type the number sequence 0160 (using the number keys in the Numeric Keypad) and enter. This number combination is the code for a space and the icon will now have no text beneath it. Unfortunately, to do this trick on a second icon in the same folder requires the you to type 0160 twice. A third icon requires 0160 three times and so on. (Don’t forget the Alt key.) This is necessary because no two icons in a given folder can have the same name. So you have to name one icon [space] and the next [space][space] and so on.
