How to install Flash player in Internet Explorer 7

Macromedia/Adobe Flash presentations are very common on the Internet. However, browsers need a player before they can display Flash. Internet Explorer uses an ActiveX component and Firefox another type. Installing the Flash player has always been a simple process in the past. In fact, it often comes pre-installed. I have had no difficulties with Firefox or with IE prior to IE 7.

However, installing Flash player 9 on IE 7 has turned out to be a problem. I don’t know who is most to blame, Microsoft or Adobe, but neither company has been making the installation easy. At first it seems like the usual straightforward procedure of the past. Go to the Adobe site, click a link, and Flash gets installed. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work for many people and and it didn’t work for me. After a few frustrating tries, I Googled the problem and discovered a bunch of people complaining. After digging around, I also found the solution. (Thank you, Annie, whoever you are.) You must uninstall any older versions of the Flash player that are on your system. If you previously had IE 6 and have now installed IE 7, an older version is what you’ve got. Neither Microsoft nor Adobe tells you about this requirement in a place you’re likely to see. Adobe has a note buried away at a knowledgebase article where you can download an uninstaller.

So the procedure is to first download the uninstaller and run it. Then you can install the latest Flash player at this Adobe link.
